THE LASTING TASK (D G D G B E, capo 4)
How come we always come undone as soon as we think we’re watertight?
I woke up early to alarms and brushed my teeth until it got light.
I owe nothing to the nighttime.
The day is sleepy, so am I. I can’t imagine how you feel.
We taped our lips together while we slept. I smelled the ocean on your breath; my eyes were open as you wept.
I think I might go back to bed. No one would even know the difference.
We put ourselves together back again. Only to miss a crucial part.
I think I saw a piece of your heart under the lounge. It belongs to the cockroaches now.
How come we always see the sun but we’re never warm enough?
I did my jobs just like you asked. But the lasting task is the unfinished task.
The lasting task is the unfinished task.
