A promise

A PROMISE (D G D F# B E, capo 1)

He came back today after years away. When we asked him he couldn’t say.

We all gave him hugs. Told him we love him so much. And never ever do that again.

And we had a beer with a bag of chips. And it felt so good.

And we laughed a lot as the sun went down.

So, make a promise you’ll get better now.

Gutters

GUTTERS (D G D F# B E)

Tell them I’m sorry. For the torrential rain today. The end-of-the-world sky. Tell them I’m sorry. I didn’t know what to do. Gone like the sand banks. How did you know that? It sounded like gunshots to me. But it could have been anything.

Looked in the mirror. I didn’t know what to say. I have been gutted.

Left in the pouring rain. The beach has been swept away. Flooded like gutters.

My heart just shudders. How did you know my name? Fluttering under a powerful number. I have been gutted.

Flooded like gutters. My heart just shudders. I have been gutted.

An unquantifiable distance

AN UNQUANTIFIABLE DISTANCE (D G D F# B E)

The first could be the last. The last could be the first.

Maybe my indecision will lift me like wings over a nameless ocean.

The start could be the end. The end could be the start.

Maybe I’ll learn to listen and time will let me in with a firm but not too firm handshake.

The message could be late. Tangled in the waves. Lost all within an instant.

The secret could be here. In between our hands. An unquantifiable distance.

I do not agree it was the right thing but it doesn’t make me right.

Punch me in the mouth

PUNCH ME IN THE MOUTH (D# G# D G C D)

Fuck it’s cold this morning. Too late to see the sun rise. Fog rolls through the street, thick.

Fuck, you almost found me. I just gave myself up. I am learning how to lose. But I don’t want to lose you.

When I come back through give something I can cling to. Maybe I am doomed. So, punch me in the mouth.

Fuck me, I’m surviving. I was dying earlier now I’m crying. Now I’m driving behind the sunset.

Fuck you almost had me. Fell out of a bad dream. I am forgetting what it’s like. Was it ever right?

When I come back home give me someone to take it out on. Put me on my throne and punch me in the mouth.

Punch me in the mouth.

Punch me in the mouth.

I want the burning. I want the flames. I want to know if the ocean really knows my name.

I think it had to happen

I THINK IT HAD TO HAPPEN (D# G# D G C D, capo 3)

I know I’ve not been good but I wouldn’t have done different even if I could’ve.

If the sun had asked where I’d been I’d have picked at my fingers and stared at my feet.

I think it had to happen. Like the next footstep, always chasing.

I think it had to happen.

I know I’ve done the wrong thing but I know I meant it.

If you got everything you’d hoped for do you think it would make it better?

I think it had to happen. Like a wrong turn, always leaving.

I think it had to happen.

I’ve nearly finished doing all the things I said I would.

And when I have I’ll go outside.

I think it has to happen.

I think it has to happen.

Like the nest sunrise, always another chance.

At least i'm not hungover

AT LEAST I’M NOT HUNGOVER (D# G# D G C D)

I’m sad, I’m nervous, I’m worried.

I’m highly-strung, I’m all worked up, I’m flustered.

But at least I’m not hungover.

I’m sick, I’m tired, I have a headache.

I’m vomiting, I’m anxious, I’m embarrassed.

But at least I’m not hungover.

I’ve got regrets, I’ve done dumb things.

I should’ve gone to bed, I shouldn’t have said certain things.

At least I’m not, at least I’m not.

At least I’m not but I feel like I may as well be.

Nearly done

NEARLY DONE (D# G# D G C D)

I’m nearly done. I’m on my way now. I’m almost home. I’m in the driveway.

The lights are off. Old clothes on the line. This door is locked. I must be lost.

And when I’m done it feels the same.

I should have known I could never really change.

I’m nearly done. I’m on my way now.

I’m almost home.

She was right

SHE WAS RIGHT (D A D G B E, capo 2)

She was right when she said: It’s a beautiful day!

No one I know is left.

I’m not going anywhere.

How will i know when my ship comes? (it's nice to go outside)

HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN MY SHIP COMES? (IT’S NICE TO GO OUTSIDE) (D A D G B E)

It’s nice to go outside even if it’s still grey.

I’m not putting shoes on because I don’t want to.

We don’t understand it but we know what it means.

The first wind blows on your face like a sigh of relief.

It’s nice to sit with you even if you’re unwell.

I’m hanging from the trees. You don’t need to understand.

When everything is spinning and everything is gross.

The last light shines on your neck and we hold each other close.

How will I know when my ship comes?

How will I know there is a bed for me?

Some will see me leaving.

And some will me coming.

Some will see me hiding.

And some will see me running.

Leave me where i am

LEAVE ME WHERE I AM

The stars are still there, we just don’t see them. I heard what you said but I don’t believe that you can take the universe with you.

You can take the universe with you but leave me where I am.

The rain still falls and I might get wet. I heard their calls but I don’t believe what they said.

Because they will take anything they can.

They will take anything they can but leave me where I am.

Leave me where I am.

The sun still shines. I can’t feel it. But if it’s daytime it has to be there.

And she is doing everything she can.

She is doing everything she can.

And I am doing everything that I can. So, leave me where I am.

Leave me where I am.
